Growing Confidence in the Outdoors

Growing confidence is not an easy task, yet once you get started, there is very little that can hold you back. Nature is a great teacher and the one place where we can learn and grow without words. Finding confidence in the outdoors can be particularly empowering. Here’s how you can begin your journey and embrace the transformative power of nature.

Start with Desire

My journey to growing my confidence in the outdoors began with simply wanting to grow my confidence. This desire sparked a series of steps that led me to where I am today. If you're reading this, you already have the desire, which is the first crucial step.

Find a Mentor

One of the fastest ways to learn is to have a mentor. Mentors provide guidance, reassurance, and the benefit of their experience. Start by going on easy, well-maintained trails with a friend or someone more experienced. The presence of a mentor helps alleviate initial fears and builds your foundational skills.

Gradual Exposure

Start with short, manageable hikes. These outings will help you get comfortable with basic outdoor skills like navigation, pacing and understanding trail markers. Gradually increase the difficulty of your hikes as your confidence grows. The goal is to reach a point where you feel capable of tackling these same trails on your own.

Embrace Solitude

Once you've built a foundation, try hiking alone on familiar trails. Solo adventures are incredibly empowering. They teach self-reliance and deepen your connection with nature. Always ensure you’re prepared and share your plans with someone before heading out.

Advance with Care

If you’re ready to move on to longer, more rugged hikes, find yourself a mentor who is experienced in the backcountry. or sign up to Venture's Adventure Therapy 101 program. This person can teach you more advanced skills such as navigation using a map and compass, understanding weather patterns and staying safe in remote areas.

Learn Essential Skills

Confidence comes from competence. Equip yourself with essential outdoor skills:

  • Navigation: Learn how to read maps and use a compass.

  • First Aid: Basic first aid knowledge is crucial.

  • Leave No Trace: Understand and practice Leave No Trace principles to protect the environment.

  • Survival Skills: Learn how to build a shelter, start a fire, and source water.

Join a Community

Joining a community of like-minded women who love the outdoors can be incredibly supportive. Look for local hiking or adventure groups. Sharing experiences and learning from others can boost your confidence and expand your knowledge.

Overcome Mental Barriers

Self-doubt can be a significant barrier. Remember, everyone starts somewhere. Celebrate small victories and acknowledge your progress. Mindfulness practices like meditation and journaling can help you process your experiences and build mental resilience.

Embrace the Journey

Remember, confidence isn't a destination but a journey. Each step you take outside your comfort zone is a victory. Nature has a unique way of teaching us about our strengths and capabilities. Embrace the lessons it offers and let it guide you toward greater self-confidence.

Growing confidence in the outdoors is a powerful journey. It fosters independence, resilience and a deep connection with the natural world.
